What is the cherry fruit fly?

The cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) is a dreaded pest of cherry trees and very easy to identify: it measures about 5 mm, has a black body, green eyes, and black-striped wings. It generally lays its eggs between April and July in cherries as soon as they begin to turn red. The larvae enter the cherries and make them unfit to be eaten. Signs of infestation include spots on the fruit and larvae inside.

To control this threat, pheromones for the Cherry Fruit Fly are a natural and effective solution. Lure them away from your cherries with these traps, preserving your harvest and promoting a thriving garden. Protect your plantings now with our pheromone-based solutions.

How to use this cherry fruit fly pheromone?

At breeding time, females secrete a pheromone to attract males. This same pheromone is contained in the capsules. Placed in the trap, the pheromone capsule attracts and helps capture males, preventing reproduction from taking place, as well as egg-laying.

Use

Each sachet contains a pheromone capsule; open the sachet and pour one into the trap’s collection basket (attention once opened the capsule must be used quickly). Then place the trap on the cherry tree you want to protect. Put 1 to 2 traps per tree depending on its size and its level of infestation.

Tips and storage

  • use a pheromone trap specially for fruit flies
  • do not touch the capsules with your fingers
  • use only one pheromone per trap
  • the pheromone is effective for 4 to 6 weeks
  • use yellow sticky traps as a supplement

What to do after trapping the cherry fruit fly in your trap?

The female generally lays 50 to 80 eggs. 6 to 12 days after laying, the maggots hatch from the eggs and feed on the cherry flesh, mainly around the pit. So it is 10 days after the captures that you should use an insecticide to eliminate the newly hatched maggots. With a natural insecticide.

When should you put up a pheromone trap in a cherry tree?

For optimal effectiveness in controlling the Cherry Fruit Fly, place pheromone traps at the beginning of spring, before the cherry tree blooms. This is when adult flies emerge and begin looking for egg-laying sites. Replace the pheromones every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain their attractiveness.

Also be sure to remove the traps after the harvest to avoid any future contamination. Protect your cherries and promote healthy fruit by integrating pheromones into your pest management strategy.
