You’ve probably heard of this dreaded insect that threatens our precious palm trees: the red palm weevil, or Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. This small beetle, although less well-known than some pests, is a true nightmare for palm trees worldwide.
It mainly attacks palm trees, like its counterpart the palm moth, by laying its eggs on the tree throughout the year in warm climates. The larvae that hatch feed on the trunk, severely damaging the trees’ structure and vitality. Signs of infestation include the presence of tunnels in the trunk, fronds that drop prematurely, and reddish-brown weevils with long antennae.
To fight this scourge, biological control methods have been developed, thus avoiding the use of harmful chemicals. Here you’ll find all the products you need to protect your palm trees. These methods include using nematodes that attack larvae in the soil or directly on the tree, injecting Bacillus thuringiensis that specifically targets the larvae, as well as pheromone traps to capture adults and limit their reproduction.
