Pine processionary caterpillar

Let’s talk about a well-known little pest: the pine processionary caterpillar, or Thaumetopoea pityocampa. You may have already come across it in your gardens or heard about it. This larva, fond of pine needles, forms processions and releases stinging hairs, harmful to humans and animals.

Active mainly from autumn to spring, these caterpillars can seriously damage or even kill trees. Signs of infestation include silky nests in the branches, lines of caterpillars coming down from the trees, and visible defoliation.

To fight this scourge, biological methods such as eco-friendly traps, pheromones, and the use of Bacillus Thuringiensis are recommended. These treatments respect the environment while being effective against the caterpillars.
