Little Owl Nest Box

The little owl hides and sleeps during the day, becoming active again at dusk and during the night. It shelters in natural cavities such as tree trunks and other holes. Because these are becoming scarce, this shelter is an excellent alternative.

Installing the nest box

• Ideal installation time: winter
• Place a little hay on the bottom
• The entrance should face east
• Ideal height: 3 to 6 m, in a tree, with a clear approach

The Little Owl (Athene noctua)

It is found in farmland and bocage areas, copses, orchards, bell towers, attics, and abandoned houses. The clutch takes place in late April–early May, with 4 or 5 blue eggs. Incubation lasts 28 days. The young leave the nest after 4 to 5 weeks.

Preferred food: small mammals (especially voles and shrews), insects, earthworms, lizards, frogs, birds.

It measures 22 to 27 cm in length.
