What does COCCIFLY® look like in a blister pack?

COCCIFLY® blister contains aphid-predatory ladybirds of the species Adalia bipunctata, the two-spot ladybird, naturally present in France. The ladybirds are in the larval stage. This is the stage at which they are the most voracious and the most effective at controlling aphids. After devouring up to more than 60 aphids per day, they will turn into adults that will lay their eggs and the cycle will start again. These larvae are packaged in a blister pack, an innovation exclusive to Biotop that serves both as a nest to allow them to arrive at the right stage, as a transport box, and also as an ideal system for releasing the ladybirds with complete ease. Its use is quick and requires no tools. The boxes also contain popcorn kernels that serve as hiding places, as well as food for the entire duration of transport.

In which cases should COCCIFLY® larvae in a blister pack be used?

COCCIFLY® larvae in a blister pack should be used when aphids are present on plants. They are effective against most aphid species. They are mainly used outdoors but can also be used indoors. Their control of aphids is very effective on shrubs and small plants. Do not use COCCIFLY against yellow aphids on oleanders. In this case, use COCCILAURE®.

How to store COCCIFLY® in a blister pack?

It is recommended to use COCCIFLY® immediately after purchasing the blister box. If this is not possible, the ladybirds can be stored for 1 to 2 days maximum away from light, heat, and chemicals in a cool environment. Warning: during this time the ladybirds may run out of food and eat each other, which will reduce their number in the box.

How to handle COCCIFLY® in a blister pack?

COCCIFLY® blister is ready to use. No preparation is necessary and they can be used directly after purchase.

Where to place COCCIFLY® in a blister pack?

COCCIFLY ® larvae in a blister pack are used to protect shrubs and small plants. The blister pack should be hung in the plants on a branch as close as possible to the aphid colonies. It is possible to move the blister pack after a few hours, before all the ladybird larvae have emerged, to position it near another aphid colony. It is recommended to place the blister pack out of direct sunlight.

How to apply

It is recommended to apply preferably in the morning or late afternoon, protecting the blister pack from direct sunlight. The COCCIFLY® ladybird blister pack requires no preparation; it is ready to use. Immediately after purchasing COCCIFLY® blister, proceed with the release. To do this, simply tear off the larval release tab located on the back of the box. Then hang the blister pack by its hole on a stem or branch, passing it through the notch provided for this purpose at the top of the packaging.

How to monitor the effectiveness of ladybird larvae

It is necessary to leave the blister pack in place as long as larvae are still present in the blister pack. Effectiveness on plants is easy to see:

  • Observable presence of ladybird larvae roaming the plants in search of aphids
  • Presence of Coccifly® larval moults in the crop (not to be confused with dead ladybirds)
  • Presence of aphid remains: the ladybirds suck out their contents and only their skin remains attached to the plants
  • After a few weeks, the larvae turn into adults and it is sometimes possible to observe ladybird eggs (yellow and elongated)

If aphid populations continue to increase a few weeks after the first application, additional booster applications can be considered.

Compatibility of COCCIFLY®

Since ladybirds are insects, no insecticide should be used for a few weeks before and a few weeks after releasing the ladybirds, including organic or biocontrol insecticides. Likewise, it is recommended not to apply other plant protection products (fungicides for example) for a few weeks before and a few weeks after releasing the ladybirds.

What to do with the packaging after use?

All of the packaging is recyclable. It is made of cardboard and a recyclable, biodegradable plastic. It can therefore be sorted and placed in the bin appropriate for sorting cardboard and plastic materials.

When should you use the Coccifly ladybird larva?

COCCIFLY® Blister can be used from March to August, as long as average temperatures are 12/13°C. It is recommended to apply the ladybirds immediately as soon as the first aphid colonies are observed, as these develop very quickly and can damage plants in just a few days. Application should be carried out only when aphids are confirmed to be present. Otherwise, it is better to postpone the application.
