The fly responsible for the walnut husk maggot

This small fly (Rhagoletis completa) attacks different species of walnut trees.

Egg-laying and development period

The female lays between 300 and 400 eggs, which she deposits under the surface of the husk, at a rate of about fifteen eggs per fruit. The larvae that hatch feed on the husk, causing damage to the flesh, which becomes soft, slimy, and black. As it rots, it stains the nut, which is no longer edible.

How to use this walnut fly pheromone?

Pheromones are volatile substances recognized by insects. They play a role in sexual or food attraction. Each substance is specific to one species. This makes it possible to trap each type of pest insect very precisely and very effectively. Pheromones are detection and control tools for populations with a strong trapping capacity.

Instructions for use

The pheromone comes in an airtight sachet. Use it as soon as the sachet is opened.

  • Remove the self-adhesive disc on the capsule cap and place the capsule in the small basket of the trap, without opening it. Handle with gloves.
  • Use only 1 pheromone per trap (combining different pheromones cancels out the effectiveness of the attraction).
  • Pheromone sachets should be stored cold:
  • Up to 5 years in the freezer
