Biopalm effectively protects against egg-laying by palm pest moths (Paysandisia archon) and prevents emerging adults from leaving the stipe. The greasy coating damages their wings, preventing them from flying properly and therefore from reproducing.

How to use Biopalm to fight palm pests?

Biopalm is a flexible coating to spray on the upper part of your palms, to prevent palm pests from coming to lay eggs. Treatment with Biopalm palm glue requires only one application per year. Moreover, as shown by its composition below, Biopalm has an original pesticide-free formulation. It can be applied to all types of palms to protect them from the following 2 pests:

Palm moth Red palm weevil The palm moth The red palm weevil

Biopalm® composition

Biopalm is a fluid paste made up of substances of natural origin such as vegetable oil, latex and pine-derived compounds. It does not require phytosanitary approval such as certiphyto.

How Biopalm® works

Adults (moth or weevil) that want to lay eggs on a palm protected by Biopalm are confronted with the protective layer, which prevents them from penetrating the fibers. They therefore end up leaving, except for those that, weighed down by traces of Biopalm, will not have the strength to reach another palm.

Biopalm application

Generally, the moth prefers to leave the palm rather than remain stuck, which is why few moths are found stuck on the palm. The method consists of applying, on the top of the palm, a thick preparation that acts as a physical barrier.

By making their way through the protective layer, or by moving over it to reach a suitable place for their wings to dry, newly hatched moths will become exhausted and dirty their wings. A high proportion of emerging moths are therefore unfit for flight. In the case of a heavily infested plant, as Biopalm does not destroy the larvae, they will continue their destructive action, which may eventually lead to the decline of the plant. In this case, a strictly curative treatment is recommended before applying Biopalm.

Recommended dosage by palm type

  • Chamaerops: 1 aerosol for 3 heads per palm
  • Trachycarpus fortunei: 1 to 2 aerosols per palm
  • Washingtonia : 2 to 4 aerosols per palm
  • Phoenix canariensis: 6 to 10 aerosols per palm

Pests Dosage applications per year Period of use Use
Palm-eating moth (Paysandia Archon) Layer of +/- 4 mm thickness over about 30-40 cm of stipe + inside the fronds including 20 cm of petiole 1 From early May to late June ideally Preventive and curative (the curative effect is effective at the time the adult emerges)
Red palm weevil 1 + 1 Immediately after each frond pruning + end of September after summer growth on the base of the "spear" (new summer leaves) Preventive only

Detailed instructions for using Biopalm

Biopalm is applied once a year, using suitable spraying equipment and when no risk of rain is forecast within 24 hours.

The area to be protected with Biopalm includes the base of the leaves forming the outer crowns of the tuft (those that are sufficiently exposed to be accessible to moths) as well as the 40 to 50 cm of stipe below.

The product layer must be at least 2 mm thick. For this, an application in two passes a few minutes apart is recommended (the product applied in the first pass settles into place, which helps reduce run-off during the second pass).

Application must be done when the year’s leaves are well exposed and, ideally, before egg-laying. The egg-laying peak occurs in the first half of July, so the optimal treatment period runs from May 15 to July 15.

Biopalm can also be applied from July 15 until the end of the egg-laying period (end of September), but the benefit gradually decreases.

Cleaning the equipment must be done immediately after application. Scrape off as much product as possible, rinse with soapy water. Make sure no product remains in the hoses and nozzle. Cleaning dried product is done with alcohol (bioethanol or denatured alcohol).

Cleaning Instructions

  • Clean the equipment immediately after application
  • Scrape off as much product as possible and rinse with soapy water
  • Use alcohol (bioethanol or denatured alcohol) to remove dried residues
