Squirrel feeder – opening lid, eco-friendly stained roof & transparent front

Welcome squirrels into your garden 🐿️ with a feeder specially designed for them. Thanks to a lid that can be opened by the squirrel itself, this feeder effectively protects food from bad weather and unwanted visitors (mice, rats), while giving you a clear view of the food level thanks to its transparent front panel.

  • Smart opening: the squirrel opens the lid itself to access the food
  • Water-based stained roof (eco-friendly): provides long-lasting protection for the wood against water ingress
  • Transparent front panel: easily check the food level
  • Protection against bad weather and limited access for other small rodents
  • Dimensions: Length 28 cm – Width 14 cm – Height 25 cm

How does this squirrel feeder work?

Designed to be intuitive, this feeder allows the squirrel to open the lid itself using its paws and snout to help itself. This keeps the supply better protected, even in wet weather, while preventing non-target rodents from emptying the feeder. The transparent front panel lets you know at any time when to refill it.

Which squirrel species are found in France?

In France, the most common species is the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), agile, curious, and very present in gardens and wooded groves. Occasionally, grey squirrels can also be seen in certain urban areas (introduced), but it’s the red squirrel that most often stops by the feeder.

When do squirrels come to feed?

Squirrels are active early in the morning and in the late afternoon until dusk. In winter, they step up their outings to find food, as natural resources become scarcer. A well-placed feeder can become a regular refuelling point, especially when temperatures drop.

What should you feed squirrels?

Squirrels have a varied diet and particularly enjoy:

  • Walnuts, Hazelnuts
  • Peanuts (unsalted, unroasted)
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Raisins or dried fruit in small quantities
  • Specially formulated food mixes for squirrels

👉 You can use, for example, squirrel food 750 g, specially formulated to meet their natural needs.

Important: avoid salty, sugary, or processed foods (bread, biscuits, table scraps), which are not suitable for their digestive system.

Where should you install the feeder?

Location has a big influence on how successfully it’s used:

  • Height: at least 2 m above the ground
  • Orientation: preferably south or east, to protect it from prevailing winds
  • Accessibility: place it near a tree, a hedge, or a natural passage point
  • Peace and quiet: avoid high-traffic areas (terrace, busy path)

Tip Maluttebio: install the feeder from the first frosts or cold spells. This allows the squirrel to get used to it before winter, and increases the chances it will come back regularly.

Why is it useful for your garden?

Squirrels are amazing acrobats that search for their food intelligently. A well-designed feeder:

  • Lets you observe these fascinating animals up close
  • Reduces pressure on bird feeders
  • Helps squirrels build up reserves for winter
  • Adds life and biodiversity to your garden
