Insects targeted with Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes

  • Cutworm larvae known as “grey worms”
  • Adult mole crickets
  • Crane flies (daddy longlegs)
  • Colorado potato beetle larvae

Cutworms (larvae of soil-dwelling moths of the genus Agrotis) on vegetable plants (lettuce, tomato, potato, onion…), adult mole crickets on lawns and vegetable plants as well, crane fly larvae from meadows (genus Tipula also called “daddy longlegs”) on lawns, young Colorado potato beetle larvae on vegetable crops (potatoes, carrots...).

Choosing the right Steinernema SC nematode pack size: 25, 50, 250 or 500 million

For SC nematodes, you can choose from 3 pack sizes, suited to your needs: 5, 25 or 50 million nematodes. You determine the number of nematodes needed depending on the application to be carried out or the area to be treated.

  • 25 million: 50 m²
  • 50 million: 100 m²
  • 250 million: 500
  • 500 million: 1000 m²

Usage table by pest

Pest Type of treatment Application period Area treated with 5 million nematodes

Cutworms

Soil treatment May to June 10m²

Mole crickets

Soil treatment May to September 10m²

Crane flies

Soil treatment September and October 10m²

Colorado potato beetles

Leaf treatment June to July 40m²

How are Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes used?

Before any use, the soil must not have been treated in the three weeks prior to their application and must not be treated again for one month. The soil must be pre-moistened to facilitate the dispersion of the nematodes. Prefer application in the morning, in the evening, or in cloudy weather because they are very sensitive to U.V.

To apply the nematodes, you have two options: a watering can for the soil or a sprayer

With a watering can for 10m²

  • Dilute the contents of the box (nematodes + white clay) in 5 liters of water
  • Mix for 3 minutes to distribute the nematodes well in the water
  • Top up with 5L of water (i.e., 1 liter/m²)
  • Spread on the soil with a watering can rose on and near the plants to be treated

With a sprayer

  • Clean the equipment before use and remove all filters before use
  • Nozzle diameter > 0.5 millimeters
  • Pressure < 5 bars

Technique for trees: spray well on the trunk and foliage and keep agitating during treatment.

After application, water abundantly (1 liter/m²) the treated area to allow the micro-worms to disperse and spread well over the soil surface. To keep them alive and allow them to move, keep the soil moist for at least two weeks, and on trees keep the trunk moist for at least 12 hours.

Tips

It is recommended to use the nematodes as soon as they are received, but you can store them out of the sun, preferably in the refrigerator at a temperature between 4 and 12°C.
