Nest box for robins: can also accommodate the redstart and the flycatcher, which readily nest in open nest boxes like this one.
This nest box for robins can also accommodate redstarts or flycatchers.
For the robin:
Place the nest box in a sheltered spot on the ground or higher up (maximum 1.5 m) among bushes or climbing plants, in a quiet, somewhat shaded place, and not in full sun or exposed to rain.
For the redstart and the flycatcher:
Hang this nest box on a tree or a wall, between 1 and 5 m high, in a sheltered and quiet, somewhat shaded spot, so not exposed to full sun or rain (preferably with the opening facing north-east), with no obstacles in the flight path.
To properly protect the nest box against magpies, cats, and other predators, you can surround it with wire mesh (with openings of about 5 x 5 cm) or barbed wire.
Clean this nest box preferably in autumn. In winter, it often shelters birds fleeing bad weather.
