The adult brown marmorated stink bug measures 12 to 17 mm. It has a yellowish-brown coloration with black punctuations. Adults overwinter in sheltered sites (bark, homes...). Emergence from overwintering takes place in spring, but egg-laying does not begin until June. It can last until September. There are 5 larval stages. The first larval stage is immobile and does not feed. Older larvae and adults disperse.
Larvae from stages 2 to 5 and adults feed by piercing leaves, stems, fruits and seeds. Damage is caused by feeding punctures on flower buds (abortion), on young fruits (drop), and on fruits, pods or seeds, causing discoloration, changes in surface texture, and spots in the flesh.
Halyomorpha halys is a highly polyphagous insect: cherries, apricots, kiwis, peaches, pears, apples, plums, grapes, hazelnuts, but also tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cabbages, zucchini, peas, beans, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries… Wheat, sunflower, corn, and soybean are also among its hosts.
