The red squirrel, a discreet garden resident
The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a small diurnal mammal, active all year round. Unlike the hedgehog, it does not hibernate: it simply reduces its activity during very cold spells. It feeds mainly on hazelnuts, walnuts, conifer seeds, buds and fungi, and builds up food stores by burying its food in several places around the garden.
In the wild, it builds a nest called a "drey", made of twigs and leaves, high up in the trees. The female has one or two litters a year, mainly in spring, with an average of three to four young. A well-placed nest box can serve as a breeding nest or as shelter from bad weather all year round.
Where to put a squirrel house?
Mount the nest box high up, between 3 and 6 metres, preferably on a conifer close to other trees or hedges that help the squirrel move around. Avoid facing the entrance south-west, to protect it from prevailing winds and rain. On a living tree, do not screw directly into the bark: first attach a wooden board with wire or a strap, then screw the nest box onto the board.
Welcoming squirrels into your garden
The red squirrel is a protected species in France. To help it settle in, wildlife protection associations recommend a few good practices:
- Install a second nest box more than 5 metres from the first, so the squirrel can move its young if there is danger
- Avoid disturbing the nest box when it is occupied, especially in spring, the breeding season
- Complete the set-up with a squirrel feeder and suitable food when food is scarce
