This nest box is suitable for the great spotted woodpecker. It is fitted with a reinforced, curved base to hold the eggs, as well as an entrance hole sealed with wood, a material woodpeckers naturally open with their beaks. Hang this nest box in a quiet, somewhat shaded spot, preferably 2 to 3 metres above the ground, with no obstacles in the flight path. Avoid places that are too sunny or exposed to rain. Clean this nest box preferably in autumn. In winter, it often shelters birds fleeing harsh winter weather.
The great spotted woodpecker can be found in woods, gardens and hedgerows. There is one brood per year: 4 to 7 white eggs, incubation lasts 16 days, and the rearing of the young takes 18 to 21 days.
Preferred food: beetle and moth larvae, ants, spiders, conifer seeds.
It measures 21 to 23 cm in length.
